KMail usually checks all accounts at the same time. It seems the mail server on your server doesn't allow more than 4 simultaneous connections from the same client (did you check the logs of your server?) and therefore immediately closes the connection. To fix the problem open ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc with a text editor (while KMail/Kontact is not running!) and add the following two lines immediately before the line '[Notification Messages]': [Network] MaxConnectionsPerHost=4 This will restrict the number of simultaneous connections to your mail server to 4.
