Make sure you're not signed into gmail. If you are, sign out, close konq and start a new one.

When you login to gmail, it always automatically takes you to the 'basic html view', with a link to click to the standard view. If you click the link, it does work, but only until you logout and in again, to be greeted with the basic view again. I'm not sure why it wont switch to the standard view by default.

This is with konq. 3.5.5, and also tested with browser identification as Firefox

There's no such link anymore. Google will redirect Konqueror users to the HTML view, you can only force it to go to http://mail.google.com/mail?nocheckbrowser . It's up to Google to decide to let Konqueror users go to the standard view by default.
