When using the Menu Item Format "Name (Description)" (as set in the panel menu configuration screen), KMenu displays no parentheses around item descriptions.  

Take KWord for example:
"Description (Name)" : "Word Processing (KWord)"
"Name (Description)" : "KWord Word Processing"

(Note the lack of parentheses in the latter format)

This is exhibited on my Kubuntu Edgy installation (KDE 3.5.5), and has also been confirmed on a Gentoo installation of KDE 3.5.5
