Example:

I set the following date format in kcontrol.

WEEKDAY, dD. MONTH YYYY

(Example: Thursday, 3. August 2006)

After setting that I start KMail and go to Settings->Appearance->Message List. It gives me the following choices:

[X] Standard format (Thu Aug 3 14:43:57 2006)
[ ] Localized format (3.8.2006 14:43)
[ ] Fancy format (Today 14:43:57)
[ ] Custom format (Shift+F1 for help)

"Standard format" in my opinion should be the one I set in the control center but *none* of the choices above conforms to the kcontrol settings.

KMail uses the KControl setting (when you select localized format), but it uses the short date format. Making it possible to use the long date format is a wish. I might add that we probably won't implement this wish since you should get what you want by defining an appropriate custom date format.

... using a radio button would be nice, because users wouldn't
have to set their kcontrol settings both in kcontrol and in kmail
again.

Maybe one could change that from

[X] Standard format (Thu Aug 3 14:43:57 2006) // some "standard" format
[ ] Localized format (3.8.2006 14:43)
[ ] Fancy format (Today 14:43:57)
[ ] Custom format (Shift+F1 for help)

to something like this:

[X] Long standard format (Thursday, 3. August 2006) // kcontrol settings
[ ] Short standard format (3.8.2006 14:43) // kcontrol settings
[ ] Fancy format (Today 14:43:57)
[ ] Custom format (Shift+F1 for help)

(or "Long KDE format" or whatever)

That means

1. replacing "Standard format" by "Long standard format" and
2. renaming "Localized format" to "Short standard format".

Btw. I cannot see any sense in the word "localized" here.
There's nothing "local" (in a sense of "country differences/
localization") about this. It just means "other than the
default/standard settings".

Sure. I'd like to see it anyway because the custom format is only
a workaround.

"Localized" uses the language-specific short date format + the language-specific time format.

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
