It would be nice if possible to see the download speed when downloading repositories and more importantly packages.

I wonder if Peter have seen this wish as there has been no response..?
Should I use launchpad/malone instead?

Yes, in 3.0, download speed is now reported in the overall progress meter. Hopefully that is enough to close this one as fixed.
