Since December 2005 Kmail does no longer work with the German provider 1&1. It only displays the first of many emails in the mailbox which effectively cannot be opened because the system gets increasingly stuck because of heavy cpu load. The problem occurs only after a couple of emails have been sent or received and persists even if a new kmail/imap account is opened on another computer.

Apparently the problem is related to the specific combination of 1&1 AND kmail. On the one hand, kmail works with other providers very well, on the other hand other mail clients work with 1&1 without any problems.

Same problem here. Only with 1und1 AND kmail!
Kmail only shows the first message in each directory, if you try to open it, kmail starts to use the whole system ram and swap till it freezes.

DIMAP works great with 1und1.

I have the problem on openSuSE (see versions above) AND gentoo (2.6.12-gentoo-r10, Qt: 3.3.4, KDE: 3.4.3, KMail: 1.8.3).

Hard to debug without an account. Is encryption enabled? If not it would be 
good if you could provide an ethereal log when you click on the folder.

Encryption ist not enabled.
