the preferences for OSD show a chooser where the messages should show, but its empty

system here is "classic" 2-screen (independent WM)

Unfortunately I currently do not have a multi-head setup to test any of the related code, but I hope to get this ability back next month.

Talking out of the blue, I'm not sure it's even feasible for the code to evaluate how many window managers / instances of X11 are running and allow for the drop down box to switch between different DISPLAYs - if I'm informed correctly we can pretty much only support Xinerama. In any case, if it can't detect any screens to chose from it should either at least show 0 or disable altogether, so it's a valid bug.

As for a fix, I think we should look into syncing our OSD code with whatever amaroK has at the time, after asking them it their stuff works or not.
